Empowering the Digital Generation: SALSO and Digify Africa
In a world increasingly reliant on technology, digital literacy is more important than ever. SALSO, in partnership with Digify Africa, recently embarked on the iLizwe Lam Digital Literacy project, an initiative designed to bridge the digital divide and equip young South Africans with the skills they need to thrive in the digital economy.
The iLizwe Lam Digital Literacy Project
The iLizwe Lam project is a flagship initiative that brings together the expertise of Digify Africa in digital skills training and SALSO's deep community connections and experience working with South African youth. Together, we delivered a comprehensive digital literacy program to learners in underserved communities.
The program covered essential digital skills including:
- Basic computer literacy and navigation
- Internet safety and responsible online behaviour
- Using productivity tools for school and work
- Introduction to coding and digital content creation
- Online research and critical evaluation of information
Digital literacy is not just about knowing how to use a computer. It is about empowering young people to participate fully in the digital world, to access information, and to create opportunities for themselves. - SALSO Team
Impact and Outcomes
The iLizwe Lam project has already made a significant impact. Learners who participated in the program reported increased confidence in using digital tools, a better understanding of online safety, and greater awareness of career opportunities in the digital sector.
SALSO remains committed to expanding this program and reaching more young people across South Africa. We believe that digital literacy is a fundamental right in the 21st century, and we will continue to work with partners like Digify Africa to make this a reality.
